I remember going to France and hardly learning any French - because I had English whenever I needed it, really. This month was much better spent. My comprehension and speaking and auditory skills, listening, increased by light years. Just phenomenal leaps in progress. The teachers and the professors were really good! They were really strong, really patient, really helpful - and just really supportive.

What's a typical day like?

Everything we do at MMLA contributes to our “24/7 language classroom.” Daily schedules vary in ways that stimulate learning, but here is a sample description:

Morning starts with breakfast at the language tables, where instructors and students share conversation and a meal. Breakfast is followed by Morning Assembly for each language program.

The main part of the morning is devoted to formalized classroom learning and electives, with students grouped by language level.

Afternoon begins with lunch at the language tables, followed by a class or electives, again grouped by level. Electives are teacher designed and may include topics such as poetry writing, filmmaking, creating a newspaper, publication, or play, writing and recording a song, or cooking a typical dish—all in the language, of course! Small-group “language recaps” then focus on the day’s learning. Afterwards, students can let off some steam—and continue learning—by participating in organized sports, games, activities, a World Cup soccer tournament against one of the other "countries," or by going for a group hike led by our talented Activity Coordinators and Residential Assistants in each language.

Evening features cultural presentations and special events. These may include cinema from target countries, music from the target cultures, guest performances, student-created films and plays, and more. New this year, we will hold an evening study hall period. The day winds down with free time in the dorms and hall meetings.

Weekend schedules are very similar to weekday schedules, with some time built in to allow students to sleep a bit later in the morning. Saturday nights feature an all-academy dance, and on Sundays students enjoy brunch and a full-morning relaxed schedule.

*Please note that 11th and 12th grade students have a later curfew and other privileges, such as the ability to sign out of afternoon activities.
