Is Any English Spoken at the Camp?

For over 90 years, students have made remarkable progress in language study at the Middlebury College Language Schools. The Language Pledge®, in which students pledge only to speak their chosen target Language, is a famous and important part of the Language Schools. It works!

At the Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy, we introduce the Language Pledge gradually. We make the Language Pledge part of our fun camp life, learning familiar camp songs in new languages, and giving awards for the groups most successful in maintaining the Pledge.

When the time is right and at a formal ceremony, you will begin to use your chosen language for all daily activity, including field trips, meals and events.

We also choose times each day and week to relax the Pledge so that limited English can be used for brief periods. And, of course, every camper and adult at camp is aware that English is always used in any situation where camper safety or health is involved.
