Rules and Guidelines

We build positive, cooperative, and fun summer programs by enforcing a few clear rules:

  1. As part of the admissions process, each student is required to sign an agreement not to use illegal drugs, alcohol, or tobacco during any part of the Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy, and to acknowledge that doing so or being in the presence of others using such substances is grounds for immediate dismissal and return to parental custody at the parents' expense.
  2. Our staff is trained and will intervene in any activity that poses a danger to a camper. We expect campers to respect and obey the directions of program staff at all times.
  3. Please download our Parent and Student Handbooks for full camp-life, health, and safety guidelines.

Student Code of Conduct

The Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy offers a unique opportunity for middle and high school students to join together to improve their foreign language skills, learn about new cultures, and make life-long friends. MMLA makes every effort to address each disciplinary issue in a proactive manner that is fair, consistent, and handled as quick as possible. We have a graduated disciplinary system.  Meaning, for minor offences students first receive a verbal warning, for continued offences they receive a written warning and a call home, and for accumulated warnings they are placed on probation.  Dismissal is the last resort, unless it is a violation of a major rule. We believe that every disciplinary action is also a learning opportunity. We strive to keep parents informed during any disciplinary process.  All students are expected to follow the code of conduct and adhere to all rules and policies.

CODE OF CONDUCT

Students are expected to:

·       maintain a safe environment for self and others.

·       honor the Middlebury Language Pledge® as guided by MMLA faculty, except in any situation in which the health, well-being, or safety of another individual is threatened.

·       behave in a friendly, respectful, and responsible manner toward all persons in the MMLA community and all others they may have interaction with during the Academy.

·       conduct themselves honestly and not engage in deceitful behavior

·       respect the worth and value of all individuals regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, or ethnic origin.

·       not engage in bullying, hazing or undermine the safety and well-being of self and others, including threats

·       not use profanity or disparaging language

·       respect and follow the instructions of all leaders, faculty, staff and residential advisors at MMLA.

·       respect community and individual property.

·       not possess, use, or distribute alcohol, tobacco, or illegal substances

·       not keep prescription or over-the-counter medication in their possession (except for topical creams, and urgent care medications)

·       attend to their academic work in a satisfactory manner

·       stay within the designated boundaries on campus, in the dormitories, and on trips, and respect single-gender spaces in the dormitories.

MMLA cannot accommodate students who are unwilling or unable to live up to these expectations.  Students learn of these rules before arriving to the program and also on the first day of the session.
