I don’t think I ever really felt uncomfortable; I felt like everybody was in the same boat as me. We all had some difficulty, not being able to speak in our first language - but as soon as we started class and I realized we were learning things in one day that took months to learn in high school, that’s when I really embraced it and tried to learn all I could. I made a ton of friends. I still talk to lots of them. I ended up being able to skip 3 grades in Spanish - and it wasn’t just me. There were definitely people who were skipping grades in school.

Admission

The Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy is open to students who have completed 7th grade through students who have completed 12th grade. While MMLA has a rolling admission process, spaces and financial aid are limited, and early application is highly recommended. Applicants are notified of an admission decision within two weeks after their applications are complete. An application is considered complete only when our office has received the on-line application with the written personal statement, as well as the applicant’s Teacher Recommendation and School Transcript.

Admission to the Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy is by on-line application and requires the following:

  • the willingness to learn, embrace the Language Pledge, and have fun
  • completion of the on-line application form
  • a personal statement*
  • a completed MMLA teacher recommendation form. CLICK HERE to download.
  • the applicant's most recent school transcript. CLICK HERE to download the transcript request form.

* The personal statement is part of the on-line application. Before starting the application, students should prepare their answer (up to 200 words) to this question: “The Language Pledge® is an integral part of the MMLA program. Immersing yourself in a foreign language is a fun, yet challenging adventure. What drives you to learn a foreign language and make this commitment?”

Please note that while it is not possible to save application information as you go, up to 30 minutes of inactivity are permitted on each page of the application before an applicant is automatically logged out. It might be helpful to have contact phone numbers, email addresses, and school contact information available before beginning the application.
 
Tuition
Tuition is for four weeks and includes instruction, shared college-dormitory accommodation, meals, all on-campus events, field trips, textbooks, and curriculum materials. The application fee is $60 and is non-refundable. Each student is responsible for his or her own personal expenses.
  • MMLA accepts tuition payment by check only. Students who are admitted and who wish to attend MMLA will be required to pay a $600 deposit within two weeks of the date of their admission notice. The balance of tuition will be due by May 15, 2010.Tuition for the Green Mountain College campus is $4,800.00.
  • Tuition for the Oberlin College campus is $5,267.00.
